(i) Definition of terms
EFFECTIVE-producing the result that is wanted or intended; producing a successful result
Being EFFECTIVE=Being IMPACTFUL (having a touch)
When we have no impact we become irrelevant. Impact=Relevancy
Being effective means
• Being extra ordinary-Impact is not in the ordinary
• Do away with familiarity.
• Do away with mediocrity.
• Be creative
• Be a risk taker.
MINISTRY-a particular area of responsibility-the spiritual work or service of a Christian or group of Christians; the period of time spent serving the Church
Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”
Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this course I was born, and for this course I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” JOHN 18:37
(ii)Fundamental questions to ponder before you serve (Jeremiah 1:5-8)
1.Am I CALLED? Do I really have a burden (A deep conviction to do something or to offer certain service without being pushed or coaxed). Burden will push and usher you into active/effective service.
2.What is my ASSIGNMENT- The specific task you feel called to perform what makes you feel uncomfortable when it is not done well-Moses felt bad when he saw injustice taking place and he was moved to take action-What you were born and appointed to do just like Jeremiah.
………“,To uproot and break down, To destroy and to overthrow, To build and to plant.” Verse 5(b)
3.Who are my target AUDIENCE-I must be equipped with tools to deal with them. Whom am I going to offer my service to? Every call of God has a target audience.
See, I have appointed you this day over the nations and over the kingdoms verse 5(a)
4.What is my LOCATION? Service must be offered to certain people in a certain place. There is what we call locational Blessings-Isaac was to stay in Gerar and not go to Egypt, Paul was at some point met to say in Ephesus though opposed there but his assignment was in that city. Where are you planted? You will only flourish where God has planted you not where you plant yourself…Identify your place of service
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you [and approved of you as My chosen instrument], And before you were born I consecrated you [to Myself as My own];I have appointed you as a prophet to the nations. “verse 5
5.Am I aware of my SEASON/TIME-impact is time bound. No service is met to be offered forever everybody has his time and season. Jesus had his 3 years of effective ministry once the time is over the ministry is over.
For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was buried among his fathers and experienced decay [in the grave];Acts 12:36
6.What is my MESSAGE-What is your theme-John the Baptist had a theme. What is the subject matter of your call? The content of your call. Do you have a clarion call, a guiding statement in all your undertakings? Where all other things fall under.
Then the Lord stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me,
“Behold (hear Me), I have put My words in your mouth. Jeremiah 5:9
(iii) TOOLS /INGREDIENTS FOR EFFECTIVE MINISTRY. (7P’S)
1.POWER-the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events:
Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. LUKE 5:16-17
• Power is needed for one to be impactful…POWER=IMPACT
• Power brings the needed transformation and relevance. Changes are evident where relevancy is present.
• Power is sought in the secret Place-Jesus used to withdraw every minister must have a frequent pattern of seeking God for empowerment for service
• You must be served in order to Serve-Christ must service us first before we serve his people effectively. Prayer moment is the moment of servicing.
But I will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.1ST COR 4:19-20
2.PASSION-Passion is a very strong feeling about something or a strong belief in something.
If you have a passion for something, you have a very strong interest in it and like it very much.
To those who sold doves he said, ‘Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!’ His disciples remembered that it is written: ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’JOHN 2:16-17
PASSION=COMPASSION=ACTION=IMPACT
Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed. “MARK 1:41
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Matthew 9:36
Serve with gladness with zeal/enthusiasm.
• If you are not moved by compassion you cannot offer acceptable service to God and to men.
• What drives you to do what you do? Is it to receive praise from men? Is it for self-satisfaction?
• True service should be propelled by compassion.
3.PRIZE-impact is costly, if it does not cost you most likely it will not be effective. If it does not cost you it does not move God nor does it touch lives.
• Spending and being SPENT for Christ-should be a key slogan in order to offer acceptable and impactful ministry.
Luke 14:28-29-We want to build a tower not a grass house.
For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,
• Do not start if you are not ready to finish it.
• Do not start if you are not ready to pay the full cost of impact.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. Revelation 12:11
Effective ministry is a product of sacrificing the following:-
a) Your energy-Using your body and mind to make things happen for others.
b) Your time-Taking your precious time to attend the needs of others
c) Your money-Using your monetary resources to reach out and touch lives-
4.. PUNCTUALITY: – strictly observant of an appointed or regular time; not late; prompt.
made, occurring, etc., at the scheduled or proper time: Work when it is still day time
• We don’t have ETERNITY to do what is EARTHLY/ TEMPERAL.
• King’s business requires a great sense of agency do it now not later.
• Help has an expiry date when you delay to do what you are required to do it becomes obsolete no longer helpful nor relevant.
Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them [in the presence of God]. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you in great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time [remaining]!” Rev 12:12
• If devil is time conscious how much more should the saints be?
• Procrastination is the material used to build a house called.
• When you receive the conviction to do something do it without delay.
5.PROACTIVE- (of a person or action) creating or controlling a situation rather than just responding to it after it has happened: In charge not challenged.
Effective ministry is a product of being self-driven not lagging behind in matters diligence.
not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; Romans 12:11
• We must initiate change for us to be effective in ministry. Changes=Impact
• Be creative come up with new things that have not been done before. Creativity=Impact
We must say no to ordinary performance. Average performance does not impact either.
6. PERSISTENCE- continuing firmly or obstinately in an opinion or course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition: ADVANCE THOUGH OPPOSSED…
But I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost, because a wide door for effective service has opened to me [in Ephesus, a very promising opportunity], and there are many adversaries.1ST COR 16:8-9
• Opposition proceeds impact. It is not worthwhile if it is not being opposed.
• Open doors attracts enemies-opportunity to serve will be crowded by opposing forces that must be dealt with for impact and success to be a reality.
• Effective service is a product of choosing to stick even when it is slippery.
• No crown without the cross. No glory without an ugly story.
7. PROMOTION –God will elevate us and bless us for serving him through serving his people
If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. John 12:26
• Honor and glory comes to them offer effective service
• We must focus on God as the source of our reward and not the people we are serving this will keep us motivated even when no one recognizes or appreciates our hard labor.
After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; Your reward [for obedience] shall be very great.”Gen 15:1.
• Selfless service proceeds great reward.
• Effective service attracts promotion and elevation in life we start small but we end up in a great manner.
His lord said to him, ‘Well done good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord. ‘Matthew 25:23
• True service fills one with great joy and satisfaction more than mere earthly materials.
